Looking for a way to meet other Habitat members and socialize with volunteers who enjoy demolishing old homes in order to build new ones just as much as you do? Then why not bowl with Habitat at Colonial Lanes! This is our first social event of the year and it’s going to be a blast!
When: Thursday, February 11th
Time: Meet at the Ginsberg Center (corner of Hill and East U) at 6:30pm. We will be providing all transportation to and from Colonial Lanes. Depending on how many games of king pin you’d like to play, we’re thinking this shin-dig will last until about 9ish.
Don’t forget - you get 20 nails for participating. Woo!

This Saturday from 7-9 p.m., Habitat for Humanity at U-M will be hosting its annual skate night. $6 covers admission and skate rental, and $4 will cover your admission if you bring your own skates. Awards will be given to those who possess the speed of Apolo Anton Ohno, the grace of Kristi Yamaguchi, and the win-at-all-costs mentality of Tonya Harding. Awards will also be of the non-tangible variety.
In all seriousness, 50% of the money we make will go towards the Michigan house we are co-sponsoring here in Ypsilanti, while 50% of the money will be donated towards Habitat’s efforts in Haiti. So come out and support a great cause while awkwardly circling the ice to classic mid-90’s jams. Trust us, it’s more fun than beach volleyball this time of year.
When: Saturday, January 30
Time: 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Where: Yost Arena
Why: To benefit TWO GREAT CAUSES AT ONCE! 50% proceeds go to Haiti relieve, 50% go to Habitat

Ann Arbor, MI (1.11.10) — Habitat for Humanity at the University of Michigan (HFHUM) and the local Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley will be hosting a dedication on Sunday, January 24 at 3pm to celebrate the Miller Family purchasing a newly renovated home in Ypsilanti. The special day will also include honoring the sponsors of the home, which include HFHUM and State Farm. A State Farm $10,000 matching grant will be directed to the local Habitat affiliate in Spring 2010, upon HFHUM students fulfilling their commitment of a $10,000 match. Habitat will use the funds raised by HFHUM and the State Farm matching grant to renovate the Miller home.
HFHUM applied for the grant last summer through a very competitive application process through Habitat for Humanity International. All campus chapters across the nation were eligible to apply, with only 21 campus chapters invited into the selection process. Upon completing the grant application and a rigorous interview, HFHUM was among 7 campus chapters to be awarded $10,000 grants across the Midwest region.
In reflecting on her experience with the grant selection process, President of HFHUM Jessica Perszyk says, “It was such an honor to even make it as a finalist. During the interview I was confident in speaking about all of the amazing things our campus chapter does at the University of Michigan. We have a very active member-base and a strong and motivated executive board that together create many great opportunities with our local Habitat affiliate. We are so glad to have received this matching grant for our local Habitat affiliate because they do really wonderful things for families in our community.”
Each year HFHUM works to raise their annual goal of $10,000 through various fundraisers and campaigns to co-sponsor the renovation of a home for a local family in need. HFHUM always partners with its sister chapter at the Ross School of Business on sponsoring a home, and the project is named the Michigan House. This year’s Michigan House was also partially sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. The Michigan House is a unique project in that is often entirely funded and constructed by University of Michigan students, making it an important part of many students’ college and community service experiences.
“We are so proud of the students’ efforts on behalf of local, low-income families,” says Theresa Finney Dumais, Development Director at Habitat Huron Valley. “It has been exciting to watch them grow and strengthen as a Habitat student chapter, and we look forward to working with them every year. Their extra efforts this year to obtain the State Farm matching grant this year was beyond our expectations, and so very appreciated!”

PCs - You will need to have macros enabled to use it - if you don’t, when you open the file, Excel should automatically tell you and give you the option to enable them.
Macs - Using Excel, press “Open” at the prompt labeled “This file contains Visual Basic macros” and “Open as Read-Only” at the prompt labeled “This workbook contains content that is not supported by Excel 2008 for Mac.” Once you have the worksheet open go to “Format” select “Unhide…” from the “Sheet” menu. Select the item named “Nails” and press “OK”. The first column contains your uniqname and you should find your nails under the fourth column.
If you have any questions about the format/can’t get it to work or if there are any issues with your points total (there probably are, so check carefully!), please email clemenfu@umich.edu. Thanks!
